I have a Dell PowerEdge 2800 here, which also has a display (5x2
characters). Though I didn't really try, I don't think that your OS (or
any program started from the OS) can talk to the LCD. I didn't found out
how. Nevertheless, it looks like a HD44780-compatible controller is used
since it initialises the first line with black squares and the last row
empty.
Maybe I will open my server again and see where the wires lead but don't
think there is much hope.

And 5x2 is a little small in my opinion :D
