That all depends on how the LCD is connected to your computer. The
HD44780-controller uses a parallel interface to communicate with its
host. You could attach it directly to your PC's parallel(printer)-port
for example. In this case you don't need a kernel module since lcdproc
uses the parallel-port directly.
In your case it seems that the LCD is connected via USB so lcdproc's
hd44780-driver is not suitable for you. Honestly I do not know the
USB-2-HD44780 bridge chip you are using. Can you give us more
information/details about the products you have bought?
