Peter,

we have a parallel port driver for the hd44780, we're trying to get
contacted w/ the vendor to be sure we can release the code, but so far
unable to get anyone knowledge-able there to deal w/.

We could get you a copy to test w/ while we're trying to get w/ the
vendor. I believe the issue we're struggling w/ is the technical docs
for the system were provided by an intermediary chassis manufacturer
under NDA.
