Could be the backlight thing ... what's the loadavg on your machine? By
default (unless things have changed in CVS :), when the loadavg drops
below 0.3 or so, the backlight turns off.

On VFDs, which don't have backlights, they instead change their brightness
to the backlight's value; thus if a VFD is told to turn its backlight off,
it turns the brightness to zero instead.
