I'm having the same problem with a 20434, and wired it up the best I
could without tying in the data lines, but didn't get anything like
a boot screen (or even a self-diagnostic).

My electrical skills can be summed up as: it's not the volts, it's the
amps that kill you.

And even that's probably wrong.
