Hi Scott,

My /etc/mtab is pretty simple. Here it be:

/dev/sda1 / ext2 rw 0 0
none /proc proc rw 0 0
/dev/md0 /home/samba ext2 rw 0 0

At to the permission:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 80 Feb 26 18:36 mtab

Hope this gives you a clue.
